Light a Candle, Raise a Glass (2023)

2023 was an incredible year in many ways.

Musically, 2023 was incredibly productive:

  • I finished my first resident season (FOUR works!) and started my second with the Oklahoma Chamber Symphony,

  • Premiered a gift for my artist friend Luena Comas

  • finally had a collaboration recording with the Stringsmen OKC (I love those folks)

  • Premiered a song for Bass Voice & Harp with Emily Duncan, which is turning into a full song cycle.

  • Started a collaboration with Guitarist Matt Denman

  • Had a World Premiere by tubist Nick Brown

  • Greenwood, Archer & Pine was performed by the Enid Symphony

  • Worked on my first Musical Theatre production as an Orchestrator

  • and collaborated with my college battle buddy Chris Prather on a theme for El Sistema OKC's 10th anniversary.

  • Composed works for solo Violin, Bassoon, Trombone, and Horn

With that production came incredible achievement:

  • My first undergraduate student had a composition recital... He was a Bio-Chem Major and gave the first non-major composition recital at OCU in at least 20 years.

  • Greenwood, Archer & Pine received three Finalist Honorable Mention citations from the 2023 American Prize

    • Orchestra Composition, Professional division

    • Social Justice-related Composition, Professional division

    • The OCS's world premiere was awarded Finalist Horable Mention for the Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the Performance of American Music.

  • Received two nominations for the OMTA Commissioned Composer prize

I also had a fair share of incredible heartache, especially the loss of three very influential people:

  • Elsa Gwendolyn Bernard, my aunt & one of my biggest life mentors

  • Dr. Irvin Wagner, a music mentor of mine that I had worked with for seven years. I wish I worked with him a lot more than I did.

  • and my mother, Annette Williams; my ace, my biggest fan, and the reason why I'm here (the reason why I'm a composer, not just literally why I'm here.)

Make no mistake that I bring them with me wherever I go.

2023 was a year of immense growth and wonderful partnerships for which I am grateful for everyone. If this is an indicator of what's to come in 2024, bring it on. Lord Willing, what will I type in 366 days? Stay tuned, my friends.

Good Grief...

I went to sleep with a full heart last night… I woke up today with a broken one. Tribulation, an orchestral work that tells my grieving story in real-time, was an amazing success. I love the folks pla
